Canadian Skateboarding!

Skateboarding in Canada in November adds an additional element of danger, I mean fun, to an already challenging sport! Some friends had been planning to go skateboarding for a while but couldn't organize it until after an early November snowfall.  After over an hour of shovelling snow and chipping ice, the real workout started.  As you can see, we made the best of an icy situation…

“Oh Oh!” (or something like that…!)

“Oh Oh!” (or something like that…!)

Canadians are resilient, tough and maybe a little insane… It turns out that rather than the snow being a deterrent, the thought of crashing into a snow bank only served to embolden these Crazy Canucks to new heights of danger and poor judgement!

For those interested in the technical side of things, I brought along just a single light, to stay somewhat nimble, and knowing the winter sun would provide a great backlight if I positioned myself properly. The gear of choice was a Profoto B10 Plus flash head, which shoots a whopping 500 watt seconds of power without a separate battery pack - so no more generator or cords! The Profoto B10 Plus took everything the harsh Canadian environment could throw at it and didn’t misfire once, which was pretty impressive. The light modifier was a Profoto OCF Magnum Reflector which adds an additional 1.8 stops of power. The OCF Magnum Reflector provides a gorgeous, punchy light and the additional power was great as I was shooting around noon and I wanted to use a high f-stop to turn the sun into a starburst (I shot around f/13 most of the day). A trusty C-Stand was used rather than a typical light stand to keep everything sturdy, given the snowy skatepark environment we were shooting in. A Nikon D850 with an additional battery grip was mounted with a 14mm - 24mm lens. Most of the time I was lying in a snowbank, shooting around 14mm, trying not to get landed on!

Sometimes great shots happen…almost! I love the graphics of this shot but the hoodie tie just had to get in the way…
